I thought the 360 days of work proverb was about understanding the culture and how that culture cultivates sucess in one particular area (math in this case). I also thought some of his other hard work stories actually lent themselves to unschooling (Bill Gates real education taking place after hours for example, not during school).

I did take issue with the KIPP school story but have even managed to (somewhat) make peace with that.

But I need to save something for Tuesday so I'll leave it at that for now. ;)Hopehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16844436671867765479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-981287355944488010.post-37107354054007135142009-05-17T14:14:00.000-05:002009-05-17T14:14:00.000-05:00We seem to be on the same path lately. I like the metaphor of "the lens of public school". This reeally helps me clarify my own thoughts and frustrations in trying to explain/defend our decisions to others who are not embedded in this lifestyle. Thanks for putting into words what I have been mulling (and muddling) lately.Hopehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16844436671867765479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-981287355944488010.post-36463279354776279222009-05-17T14:10:00.000-05:002009-05-17T14:10:00.000-05:00I had many of the same conflicting thoughts about ...I had many of the same conflicting thoughts about this book (surprise, lol). I kept thinking that I shouldn't like it, shouldn't be reading it, etc. but somehow couldn't tear myself away. I even debated just taking it to the used bookstore instead of bringing it to share because it seemed almost an embarassing book to have like based on the cover and the content.

I think ultimately the harsh honesty in the character is what drew me in. She was hiding from herself in all the angst and I think many people, not just teenagers, do this. I've been musing about the nature of the self, personality, the soul, the ego, and things like that for about 10 years now (and not really making any progress, LOL!) I really like Your Sacred Self by Wayne Dyer. Have you read that?

I was thinking about your river analogy and about how the better you know someone (like, say, my husband), the harder it is to describe/define them. The less well you know someone, the easier it is to sum them up in a couple of words ("judge" them or put them in a box as people, "like x y and z"). I think it is telling that "knowing well" often means "hard to describe in words" to me--I think this because in knowing well, you see "past" the the personality and to the essence (maybe).

MollyMollyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09403300358334954024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-981287355944488010.post-36743038895882513032009-04-20T14:13:00.000-05:002009-04-20T14:13:00.000-05:00I think it is really interesting that you posted t...I think it is really interesting that you posted this, Hope, because one of the other quotes I marked in the book was this one:

"As the saying goes, 'You cannot step in the same river twice.' I love the thoughts about who we are and w...Molly,

I love the thoughts about who we are and where our personalities play into that... it can be depressing but also liberating to know that we aren't just this small, superficial thing we call personality.

I think of personality and self like this: If we are all just a cup in the ocean that is God (or the Universe or whatever word someone may choose) then perhaps our personalities are just a cup from the RIVER that is our self. The ultimate goal of this life it to try to fill our cup from as close to the source of the river as possible for this is where the purest part of our self is.

I also think that the realization of things already there, or a lack of realization, is a part of that personality; the more we realize about the realities of the Universe the closer we move to the source of our own river.Hopehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16844436671867765479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-981287355944488010.post-62609685383337704582009-04-18T17:39:00.000-05:002009-04-18T17:39:00.000-05:00Oh definitely. I also can see it ...I really enjoyed the Pink Kit. I also can see it that it could be both good and bad in labor. If a woman is going into labor thinking that if she just knows "this or that", or does "this and that," everything will go perfectly, then I do not think this is the resource for them. I think where this would be excellent is if a woman wants to really know and understand her body better, and learn how it may best work for her. I also think that this would be a great resource for midwives. I think it is also great because so many women are told that squatting is the best position to birth in, and the Pink Kit shows that this is simply not the case. It may be the best position for some, but there are many other positions that will be better for other women.
I think it would be great to teach women about their bodies, and help them to know what MAY (not will) help them birth their babies, and I feel this information can really do that if presented in the right way.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-981287355944488010.post-14249798404731721072009-04-06T18:10:00.000-05:002009-04-06T18:10:00.000-05:00You're right that "The Father's Home Birth Handboo...You're right that "The Father's Home Birth Handbook" is a good read, full of interesting stories.
